PostSubject: Puppy Training   Tue Feb 12, 2008 1:19 am

So we are getting very excited to get Bones. ( Our new name for our RedBone ) I have raised Guide Dogs in the past and its a whole different way of training a dog. Generally Guide Dogs are meant to be grown up people and quick. ( Figure of Speech) No sleeping on beds sticking heads out car windows etc etc. - So I have been told that you have to treat a dog the way you would want it to act when it's older. For instance someone told me that you shouldn't hold the puppy a lot because when they are 80lbs+ he'll want to be held all the time. What are your thoughts on this. I do plan on taking Bones to a puppy class as soon as we get him as I am a little green now myself. We are planning to spoil the heck out of Bones. My daughter already has dibs on Bones sleeping at the end of her bed with her. Thanks:)

Well spoiled is good but it just depends on when and how you do all that spoiling. Redbones are very smart and you will see him learn quick, But unless its part of the game to behave you will find yourself repeating the training over and over again. Its a good thing to not hold them alot for two reasons one they are fragile one drop cou;d ruin your hound. And two yes it is right that they will look for someone to drown with 80 to 110 lbs of raw weight. I have said it before that the best training is done when the spunk is lowered. So dont just let him out and start cracking the wip so to speak. The training is best done within the time of the day you will be spending with them later. Thats hard to exsplain hope you understand that. Also a overload of attempted training all at once will make your job harder and the pup will fall behind in training. You said something about classes, Thats good but do make sure they are a class with working dog / hunting dog behaviorall skilled training.

I cannot stress enough how much they need to run.

Easy words such as No, Stay, Sit , Come, Here, Keep it easy and simple. And consistancy is the key. If you go out side take your dog,If you want a drink tell your dog to get a drink. (Thats is for Hunting purposes) If you spend alot of time with him or her at a young age things training wise will be slightly easier.

Also note once you establish whos the alpha male with your male hound he will look for a pack leader, One who is at the top and that is mostly respected by him. So to make him more universal you will need to have the folks who you intend to give him commands, Well they must be in the training and you all need to be on the same page. Things like one person says Sit! And another says Down! Its almost a must to have a family meeting to set the issue straight with the commands ect...Once again consistancy is the Key and it will be hard to be consistant when your all mixed up on what means what.

Thanks for all the great info... makes perfect sense. I will definetly make sure his class is a working class. I'm really good at the simple commands; just need to learn more since this will be our first dog we get to keep past the age of 18 months... Yipee!!!

Youll be fine, By 18 months things will all be layed out for him. You just have the stud issue to deal with.=? Breed / No breed.

So are you still going to train others ? Or will you have other dogs on your property?

Sonyasmum (Jenn) Is a little scared about the pup thing as well, Youll both be fine.
I will help you all through every step. It is my devotion to the breed that will have me up to par on the Redbone training always and forever.

Thanks. I know we won't breed just because we have no knowledge in that area at all. The only way we would breed is through you if you needed a male. Then again raises the question you brought to our attention about neutering a male after they know what its like to breed. Smile

Bones will be our only dog. We have a hamster that will go to Grandmas house because I think Bones may REALLY REALLY love him.

They are growing so quickly. I love the pictures I just saw of them. They look like they are sitting. Too cute.

I'll defiently stay in touch once we get Bones... especially in the training part and just to attach cute pics to the site. Smile Can't wait
