PostSubject: Potty Training???W   Mon Mar 31, 2008 1:18 am

Hi,

Its been a few day and our pup is doing great! HOWEVER, I need some help on a potty training debate I have been having!

I have been faithfully taking bones out to relieve himself everytime he wakes, eats, is done playing etc etc. I always beat him to it so to speak and it's working well. I verbally praise his when he goes, and he knows he is doing a good job. ( We used some of J's tips on this topic too, or should I say I have been using the tips, since I stay at home with Bones and I also don't have to wake to go to work everyday. )

So yesterday we had a visitor ( not saying who Smile ) and was told time and time again, that if Bones wet's the floor, you smash his nose into it and spank him on the rear end! TWICE. NOt right! Right???? Haven't done this. Guess I'm just asking for more reason's why not to do this, (#1 being never raise a hand to a dog!!!!! )

Let's together end this debate!!

Just give me more fuel for my fire. Cool

Thanks Smile

You know we never did that to Bella for the first two weeks or so. Then one day my husband smushed her nose in some urine on the rug and it seemed like overnight she was potty trained. I don't know if the actual training just clicked that day or it really worked. I'd like to think she really just "got" it.

I would try letting him see you get all bent out of shape over the mess and the spot he goes needs to be a bad place to be, Its kinda hard to exsplain. Scold is ok id only tap that **S if he is caught in the act otherwise face in is good and will probably have a good outcome. Oh and one thing my pups might remember pine chips. If you make a small round outside the door force him to go there once he does, He may not ever go in the house again and for one good reason' the place to go is outside the door Cool Hey dont forget I pretty much have double trouble here as I am keeping two affraid But do that it seems to be working with my two. Good luck W

Our little guy has been so good and smart .But when it come's to potty traiing... UGH!!! Lately after we spend time outside playing, he comes in the house and goes potty right in front of me. It happened 3 times yesterday. I thought what the heck! We we're just outside all day. I don't pay attention to when he goes, and figure he already did by the time we go in. Is this my fault?? I'm guessing. Or is he just saying, "My house, My potty" lol

Sometimes I leave our sliding glass door open. We'll be sitting on the floor right by the door, he'll go to the door, and relieve himself right there.

I'm guessing it's something I'm not doing right. Any suggestions. I forgot how hard this was. Granted it's only been 1 week, but he should be using the toliet by now, right. Just kidding. tongue

Help!!! Smile

I have in the past used anti Mating spray, Spray it in the spots he is thinking is ok to go. They have products that are for that, A detorant thats the idea now I would think. I would seriously think about a small pile of wood chips outside the door, Slowly gradually move the wood chips further and further out back or wherever you want him to go. These are a few ideas. Be patient dont let him see you giving up before he learns, Giving up as in being pissy to him or her. At the moment is Ok but to be angry for a long period, Well the dog will tend to forget the trouble they caused thuse confusing him or her on your actions. This is truelly and naturally the hardest part of a house training a pet. They have a out side now how do we do this?? I use other dogs they follow the older ones to the relieving spots. Also you now have a Colder nosed hound than most Redbones would be and he just maybe can smell other pets or that could be a place where someone dragged in poop on their foot somewhere down the line. They can smell super super good thats why I like the Anit mating spray. Good luck keep us posted. J

I wrote down a schedule for my pup. I took her out in the morning...and took her outside at different times in the house, after dinner and breakfast...and immediately after a nap. Even if she went in the house...I wrote it down. After a day or so I had a good idea about when she had to go. I'd take her out 20-30 mins before to the same place every time on a leash. (If I let her go on her own...she must messed around and didn't do what she needed to do.) The woodchips may be a super idea to use since that's how J. trained them to go in a spot. He may be way confused since he doesn't have any. It is pretty hard the first few weeks and I am sure harder with a hound b/c as J said they can smell everything.

I will try the schedule and defiently go get some wood chips. I want to think he's doing better, or should I say I'm doing better. Smile It's just so dang hard. I have to admit as well, that when we moved into our house, the previous renters had dogs and cats, and didn't really care what the house looked like. We are still working on getting 4 more rooms replaced with carpet. Maybe that's the problem too??

Let's cross our fingers. Thanks everyone!

Yeah I could see that being an issue. Just keep in mind there will be good days and bad days. But eventually it works out in the end.

I have been keeping him under lock and key. It's been working. I have to say he likes it too. I just can't let him out of my site! It will pass soon, I suppose. Can't imagine remembering this time for the rest of my life. It just sucks!

Yeah it really took about 2 weeks for us to get things under control. I thought I was going to go insane for that time. And I did that too...if I couldnt be sitting there watching the pup...she was crated. After that it was just an accident every now and then. It gets easier. It's just like the first few weeks of having a baby at home...except you don't have diapers. Smile

I've always been told the "face in potty method" doesn't work. Especially if you didn't see him do it. I've brought ours to the potty and showed it to them and told them "NO, bad dog!" but never put their face in it. I figure it's got to be unsanitary to some degree for the dog. Smile Just my thoughts.

I agree with keeping a potty schedule. We go out every 4 hours now. Sometimes it's longer if I'm at work and Tony's home or if it's "night-night" time. As long as they potty before bedtime we're good overnight. If they don't, and we don't make them, and they go inside it's technically our fault not theirs. Well, Tira doesn't potty inside ever unless she's REALLY sick to her stomach. Even then she'll warn us that she's got to go before having the accident.

The pacing...if you see pacing run for the door. Gunner and Bella pace in the morning like starting around 6. Gunner does it for food I think mostly. The books always say when they start sniffing around but that would be hard to do when you have a hound that sniffs everything...you'd be outside all the time! Smile

Update really quick..... Potty training is getting there. However, I have discovered two new habit's Rustee is doing.

First, he walks and pee's at the same time. So, in the morning if I don't pick his 30# butt up, he will wet the floor on the way out.

Second, If he stands by the door, he doesn't whine. Just stares into space. When I run over to open the door he has already went. I'll put him outside anyways, but he just sit's by the back door as if I will let him right back in, NOW.

Oh, and last. He'll be outside while I run Haley to school, or we will all be playing outside.... he'll come running in the house and go potty on the floor, right in front of us!

I had an outside door mat that he kept going on and gradually moved it to the far corner of the yard. He does go there, if he's not being awnry. I'm just at my ropes end. Not to mention 3 bottles of Miracle Spray, which works well for stains. Smile

Is this just him being awnry, and telling me haaa haaaa Mom???? Can I pack him out every morning at 80 pounds?

Thanks for listening, again.
